Crystal Encapsulation: Floating Gems Trapped Inside the Nail
A practical Sofia K. technique tutorial on crystal encapsulation, floating gems, clear builder gel, and smooth glass-like nail finishes.
Have you ever looked at a luxury snow globe and wondered how everything inside seems to float so perfectly?
That's exactly the feeling crystal encapsulation creates.
Instead of placing crystals on top of the nail, where they can catch on clothes or eventually fall away, this technique seals tiny crystals beneath a clear layer of builder gel. The gems appear suspended inside the nail, sparkling from every angle like precious stones trapped inside glass.
It's elegant, modern and wonderfully practical. You get all the glamour of crystals with a perfectly smooth finish that feels comfortable for everyday life.
If you've always wanted nails that look like wearable jewellery, this technique is about to become one of your favourites.

What You Need
- Base coat
- Gel polish or sheer nude base
- Builder gel or clear hard gel
- Flat nail crystals or tiny crystals
Crystal picker or wax pencil
- Fine tweezers
- Fine liner brush
- UV/LED lamp
- Nail file and buffer
- No-wipe top coat
- Cuticle oil
Prepare the Nail
Shape your nails and complete your normal preparation routine.
Apply your base coat and cure.
Next, apply one or two thin coats of your chosen colour. Milky pinks, soft nudes, sheer champagne and transparent jelly shades are perfect because they allow the crystals to shine beautifully through the clear gel.
Cure every layer completely before moving on.
Plan Your Crystal Placement
Before picking up a single crystal, decide on your design.
You don't need dozens of gems.
In fact, elegant encapsulation usually uses only a few carefully positioned crystals.
Try placing them:
- Near the cuticle
- Along one side of the nail
In a gentle flowing curve
- Inside a delicate swirl
- As a tiny floral centre
- Scattered like floating stars
Keeping some empty space around the crystals helps create the illusion that they're suspended inside clear glass.
Suspend the Crystals Inside the Nail
Now the magic begins.
Apply a medium layer of clear builder gel over the nail, but don't cure it yet. The gel should be thick enough to support the crystals without allowing them to sink straight to the bottom.
Using a wax pencil or crystal picker, carefully lift one crystal at a time and gently place it into the uncured gel. Instead of pushing it all the way down, allow it to rest naturally within the gel layer. You want the crystal to appear as though it's floating rather than sitting directly on the nail surface.
Use a fine liner brush to carefully guide the gel around each crystal. If you notice small air bubbles forming beside a gem, gently tease them away with the tip of the brush before curing. Clear gel surrounding every crystal is what creates the beautiful magnified effect.
Once you're happy with the arrangement, cure the nail completely to lock every crystal into position.
Create the Floating Glass Effect
After curing the first layer, inspect the nail from the side. You'll notice the crystals may still sit slightly proud of the surface.
Apply another layer of clear builder gel, allowing it to gently flow over the entire nail. Rather than brushing back and forth repeatedly, float the gel lightly across the surface using slow movements. This helps create a perfectly smooth dome without disturbing the crystals underneath.
Turn the finger from side to side under the light. If any crystal edges are still visible, add a tiny amount of extra gel only where needed to fully bury them beneath the surface.
Once the nail looks completely smooth, cure thoroughly.
The finished result should feel perfectly flat when you run your fingertip across it, while the crystals appear to sparkle from deep within the nail as though they are suspended inside a piece of crystal glass.
Refine and Finish
If necessary, lightly file the surface to perfect the shape before removing any dust.
Apply a no-wipe top coat for a flawless glass-like shine and cure one final time.
Finish with nourishing cuticle oil.
Sofia's Little Secret
Crystal encapsulation has a little illusion hidden inside it.
People will often reach for your hand because they can't quite work out where the crystals are.
They look raised...
…but when they touch the nail, it's perfectly smooth.
That tiny moment of surprise is exactly what makes this technique feel so luxurious.
Sometimes the most beautiful sparkle isn't sitting on top of the nail.
It's the one quietly glowing from within. 💎
