Bubble 3D Gel: Playful Raised Bubbles That Look Like Drops of Glass
A practical Sofia K. technique tutorial on bubble 3D gel nails, raised clear droplets, and glass-like dome placement.
Some manicures are elegant.
Some are glamorous.
Bubble 3D gel is simply impossible not to smile at.
This fun technique creates perfectly rounded, crystal-clear bubbles that sit proudly on top of the nail, almost as if tiny drops of water have frozen in place. The effect feels modern, playful and surprisingly luxurious when paired with soft colours or chrome finishes.
The best part? Every bubble catches the light differently, giving your manicure movement every time you wave your hand.
Let's create your own little bubble world.

What You Need
- Base coat
- Gel polish
- No-wipe top coat
- Thick builder gel or 3D sculpting gel
- Dotting tools (small, medium and large)
- Fine liner brush
- UV/LED lamp
- Isopropyl alcohol (if needed)
- Cuticle oil
Create a Beautiful Background
Prepare your nails by shaping, buffing and cleaning away every trace of dust.
Apply your base coat and cure.
Choose a colour that lets the bubbles become the star. Milky white, sheer pink, nude, baby blue, soft lavender, pearl chrome or jelly colours all create beautiful results.
Apply two thin coats, curing each layer separately.
Finish with a no-wipe top coat and cure completely.
The smoother and glossier your background is, the more realistic the bubbles will appear.
Decide Where the Bubbles Will Float
Before adding any gel, imagine tiny water droplets resting naturally on the nail.
The prettiest bubble designs never use identical sizes.
Instead, mix:
- Tiny bubbles
- Medium bubbles
- One or two larger feature bubbles
Leave small spaces between them so every bubble can stand out individually.
Natural-looking spacing always feels more realistic than perfectly organised rows.
Build Perfect Rounded Bubbles
This is where the magic starts.
Using a dotting tool, pick up a generous bead of thick builder gel. Gently lower the bead onto the nail without pressing it flat. Let the gel settle naturally into a rounded dome. The secret is to place the gel, not spread it.
For larger bubbles, repeat this process with a slightly bigger bead. If the gel begins to flatten before curing, don't panic. Use the tip of your dotting tool or a fine liner brush to carefully nudge the gel back towards the centre using tiny circular movements. This encourages it to regain its rounded shape.
Create one bubble at a time rather than covering the whole nail at once. After placing each larger bubble, flash cure it for around 10–15 seconds. This locks the dome into place before adding the next one, preventing neighbouring bubbles from flowing into each other.
Vary the height as well as the size. Some bubbles should sit slightly taller than others, just like real water droplets.
Add Depth and Make the Bubbles Look Real
Once every bubble has been flash cured, examine the nail from several angles under a bright light.
If a bubble looks too flat, add a tiny second bead of builder gel directly onto its centre. Because the first layer has already cured, the new bead will build extra height instead of spreading across the nail. Cure again after each adjustment.
Now think about balance. Place a few tiny bubbles around the larger ones to create a natural cluster, rather than leaving the biggest bubble isolated. These smaller droplets help the design feel organic and make the larger bubbles stand out even more.
Finally, rotate the nail slowly. Every bubble should reflect the light with a smooth, glass-like surface. If you notice uneven edges, gently guide the gel into shape before giving the nail its final full cure.
The finished manicure should look as though crystal-clear droplets have landed softly on the nail and frozen in place.
Finish the Look
Once everything has fully cured, inspect the surface.
If needed, wipe away any inhibition layer according to your gel system.
Avoid applying another thick top coat over the bubbles, as this can reduce their beautiful raised shape.
Finish with nourishing cuticle oil.
Sofia's Little Secret
Bubble nails have a wonderfully playful personality.
People almost can't resist touching them because their eyes tell them they're wet...
...but their fingers discover they're perfectly solid.
Pair crystal-clear bubbles with a pearly chrome base, a soft jelly pink or a dreamy aura manicure, and suddenly your nails look like tiny drops of morning dew catching the first sunlight.
Sometimes the happiest manicure isn't covered in glitter.
Sometimes it's just a handful of perfectly placed little bubbles that make everyone smile. 🫧✨
